Mt. Oyama is a holy mountain in Isehara City in Kanagawa Prefecture. It has been an object of worship and a place of teaching throughout history, and was worshipped by people from all walks of life. Minamoto no Yoritomo offered a sword to defeat the Taira clan here, and it is said that the culture of osamedachi (sword offering) was born out of this event. The influence of this culture can be seen in Japanese rakugo comedy and ukiyo-e art. The surrounding area is full of delights such as the historic Oyama Afuri Shrine, the stunning view from the mountain cable car and places to sample the local cuisine.
This shrine was built in 200 BCE. It houses important dieties such as Oyamatsumino-okami (Mountain God), Takaokamino-kami (Water God), and Oikazuchino-kami (Thunder God). The lower shrine has an “Osamedachi” exhibition (sword offering ritual), as well as a place where one can drink the mountain’s holy water.
Mt.Oyama is known as “rain fall mountain”, and has been revered as a place which can bring rain. The blessing of rain from the heavens gave birth to the thick forest area below, providing a habitat for the wild deer and boar.
This is a cable car which traverses an 800 meter gap that links the Oyama cable car station with the Afuri Shrine station. On the lower mountain side, there are numerous viewing seats with a curved glass that extends from below up to the ceiling, providing stunning views of the surrounding area.
There are numerous areas of interest along this path, including Oyama Tofu and Oyama Spinning Top Toys, guest houses where visitors can enjoy hot pot dishes made with local vegetables, and souvenir shops. There are 362 steps in all, and visitors can enjoy pictures of spinning tops and quizzes along the way to the top.
