It is located next to the Tama River, so while there is plenty of nature, it also used to be home to an amusement park that opened in 1927 and operated for 75 years. There are lots of shopping and commercial facilities that make this a popular neighborhood. The largest park in Tokyo, the Ikuta Ryokuchi Park, is also located in this area. Visitors can enjoy the abundant nature and at the same time learn about Japanese history and culture at locations such as the Traditional Indigo Dyeing Workshop and the Open-Air Folk House Museum. The natural surroundings change with the season, so anytime is the perfect time to come and learn more about Japanese folk culture.
A local Japanese sweet shop near the station. Their Dango and Dorayaki are perfect for takeout. Renown sweets of Kawasaki City are also available at this shop.
Japan Open-Air Folk House Museum
This is an open air museum opened in 1967 with the purpose to preserve the 25 folk houses to the next generations. The typical Folk Houses of Eastern Japan have been relocated to this museum, and displayed with them are Water Mill and farm equipments, some designated as important cultural properties.
Traditional Indigo Dyeing Workshop
Opened in 1983, this facility preserves the fast disappearing tradition of indigo dyeing and aims to preserve it for future generations. Visitors can experience indigo dyeing with handkerchiefs.
The Fireplace Society
Burning the firewood in the fireplace or the oven not only directs smoke to the thatched roof, keeping it dry, but it also breathes life into the house. This volunteer group provides friendly fireplace and conversation for visitors.
